A New Concept of Life

Angie was feeling pretty anxious that hot summer morning as she was on her way towards the port to welcome her father – a sailor that had put out to sea about six moths before-. She was so blissful because of her father’s homecoming that her attention was caught by little things she had never noticed before, such as the leaves swirling and rustling in the breeze and the colourful butterflies dancing around her.
She arrived at the harbour and contemplated tenderly the families that were warmly welcoming the sailors. However, a feeling of alarm invaded her when a marine, who looked rather worried, came towards her and asked whether she was Mr Jones’ relative. Confused, she asked innocently what was wrong. The man led her to a private room where some officers were having a meeting. They coldly explained to her that her father had become very ill and after some days of agony he had died. They gave her a little box containing a precious golden bracelet and a short letter that Mr. Jones had left for her and after that they continued with their tasks.
As soon as she left the room, she burst out into tears and ran towards her home wishing to find some calm. Still, she didn’t. Feeling dejected, Angie gazed at an old picture of her father and began to evoke their earliest memories. Suddenly, a ring at the door interrupted her recollection. It was the postman who had a letter for her. Angie felt curious since she wasn’t expecting anything. Not until she read it did she realize that that letter was her pregnancy test result: she was expecting a baby. She had been so mournful that she had forgotten all about that. Angie felt cheerful, though she couldn’t help feeling sorrowful. On the one hand the most important person in her life had passed away; on the other hand a new life was coming.
She looked trough the window and distinguished a shooting star in the sky. Tears tickled down her face. Angie understood death was an unavoidable part of life. Now, it was her turn to be strong and bring up the baby she was expecting as her father had done with her. Little by little the feelings of mourn and grief began to subside. Deep inside, she knew somebody was watching over them.
